Calvin Jerome Harlow was born August 12, 1837, in Newton, Massachusetts, to Jerome and Mathilda Harlow. Calvin’s parents owned a restaurant that was a popular meeting spot for the town’s elite. The family lived in a small apartment above the restaurant. Although Calvin came from a humble upbringing, he was inspired to move on to bigger and better things—and for that he would have to move West. As the city changed, in 1972 the house was moved from its original Bunker Hill location to its current location near Pasadena. Another historic house, known as “The Castle,” which previously held the record for California’s oldest house, was moved alongside it. Unfortunately, in 1975, vagrants started a fire that damaged Harlow House and destroyed The Castle.

To really commit to the old Hollywood bit, here are a few suggestions on activities to plan your day around. Sited across the street from the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood Roosevelt is the oldest continuously operating hotel in L.A. And was the site of the first Academy Awards event in 1929. Since the hotel’s original opening in 1927, it’s been steeped in glitz and quickly garnered a reputation as a place to see and be seen. El Cholo was one of the very first Mexican restaurants established in the city. Richie was waiting for her next meeting when she realized she might have 10 minutes to spare to see her son and daughter and give them a quick cuddle.

The retailer sells Richie’s jewelry line, she shops the site for her own wardrobe, and “we decided to talk about where I was going as a designer,” she said. She joined the company in 2014 as co-founder Katherine Power's executive assistant and over the years has written hundreds of stories for Who What Wear. For sprawling views of Los Angeles and the best vantage point for a photo of the Hollywood sign, head to the Griffith Observatory, up on Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. Its sleek art deco lines and hilltop position make the planetarium a glamorous icon on its own.

Later that year, Calvin started building what would become Harlow House. Determined to provide an impressive home for his family in their new state, he spared no expense during the construction process. He hired local artisans to hand-carve the decorative columns, eaves, and balustrades. He also imported many architectural elements from Europe and Asia. Although he never ended up traveling outside of the United States, he enjoyed sharing these exotic pieces with visitors to the home. Otherwise, much of her time has been taken up by her new collaboration with popular Los Angeles-based fashion retailer and manufacturer Revolve.

The Hollywood sign isn’t the only Los Angeles establishment celebrating its 100th anniversary this year—El Cholo is also ringing its centennial this year too. Founded in 1923 by Alejandro and Rosa Borquez, El Cholo was one of the first Mexican restaurants in the city and is still family-owned. It’s known for its homey, old school Mexican American fare.

Some crowd favorites on the menu include cheese enchiladas, green corn tamales, and the comforting chicken tortilla soup. There’s perhaps no better place to immerse yourself in the history of old Hollywood than at Larry Edmunds Bookshop. Located on Hollywood Boulevard, this bookstore focuses on books, photos, and posters that cover the movie industry—there are more than 20,000 books and 500,000 movie photos for sale.

Richie has created a capsule ready-to-wear collection of a few dozen pieces under her House of Harlow label for the retailer. The collection was inspired by Lauren Hutton in the '70s, lounging in the Pacific Isles. That translates to a plethora of day-to-night pieces, including matching sets in juicy hues, interesting slip dresses, sleek swimwear, and crochet pieces that are best described as modern bohemian. Another 1933 Group creation, the Formosa Cafe has been a Hollywood staple since 1939 and was originally located across from the Samuel Goldwyn studio.

But while being fame-adjacent in the audience of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Has its own thrill, visiting the city lets you step back in time and be immersed in the glamour of the silver screen. And this year, the Hollywood sign is turning 100 years old, making it the perfect occasion to immerse yourself in the L.A.
